How does an online MBA course work?

Online MBA courses are offered by respected universities around the world. The growth and success of online MBAs is attributable to the fact that they cater to the educational requirements of the working professionals who do not have the time for a full-time university course. The fees for online MBA courses are significantly lower than those for on-site courses. The manner in which an online MBA course works is explained below.

The majority of the universities do not discriminate between an on-campus MBA and an online MBA in terms of course content, faculty, and the degree offered. This means that students with an online degree have an equal opportunity at progress in their chosen profession. However, the mode of learning and interaction between faculty and students is different for online MBA courses.

Online MBA degree courses are accredited programs. Some universities allow students to pace their online MBA whereas others have only schedule for completing an online MBA program.

Universities usually have their own course management systems for delivering course material to the students. Student activity in online MBA courses will involve completing online exercises and assigned readings, interactive group discussions, individual and group projects, individual and group tests, etc.

Discussions between students can be via synchronous chat rooms that are moderated by faculty or through asynchronous discussion threads. Online discussion forums enable greater student participation and meaningful communication as the students have time to think about issues and their responses. Online exams, reports on case studies, and projects submitted online are assessed in the same media formats in which they are submitted. Grades are allotted on the basis of these assessments.

An online MBA offers students the flexibility to choose the most suitable time during the day for logging on to their online course. Students are free to work as per their convenience keeping in mind the start and end dates of the program. An online MBA offers students the freedom to pace their studies as per their convenience but at the same time it demands a disciplined approach as working at home in a distraction-filled environment is not easy.

Admissions to online programs can be obtained at any time of the year; programs are scheduled for spring, summer, and fall courses. The course calendar is not very different from that followed for classroom courses.

Admission requirements to an online MBA course usually include a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and work experience. Admission requirements for international students include a minimum score in exams such as GMAT and TOEFL. MBA course credits taken from other institutions are transferable if certain criteria are met for local and international students.

Modes of payment for online MBA programs include checks, money orders, credit cards etc. Financial assistance is available in the form of federal loans, private loans, employer funding, Perkins loans, etc. Tuition Assistance and Veteran’s Administration Benefits are two of the many options that defense personnel can take recourse to for financial benefits while pursuing an online MBA program.
